Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan built his first car, a three-wheeler, in Malvern and founded the Morgan Motor Company in 1910 at Malvern Link, Worcestershire. Morgan three-wheelers, with V-twin engines ahead of the front wheels, were built from 1911 until 1939, and four-cylinder F-Series three-wheelers until 1952.
The first four-wheeled Morgan, the 4/4, arrived in 1936 with a Coventry Climax engine, and the Plus 4 followed in 1950, first with Standard Vanguard and then Triumph engines. In 1968 the Plus 8 introduced the Rover V8, and it stayed in production in various forms until 2004. The aluminium-chassis Aero 8 of 2000, with a BMW V8, brought the design up to date while keeping Morgan’s hand-built ash-framed bodies.
The Morgan family controlled the company for more than a century, until the Italian investment group Investindustrial took a majority stake in 2019. Morgan still builds its cars by hand at the Pickersleigh Road works in Malvern Link, making several hundred a year.
