Gerard McGovern was born in Coventry in 1956 and attended Binley Park school, where he was introduced to Chrysler design boss Roy Axe, who remained a major influence. Chrysler sponsored him at Lanchester Polytechnic, now Coventry University, and he then studied automotive design at the Royal College of Art.
He started at Chrysler Europe’s Styling Studio at Whitley in Coventry, spent 1978 with Chrysler in Detroit, and returned as a senior designer for Chrysler Europe and Peugeot. In 1982 he rejoined Roy Axe at Austin Rover, where he worked on the MG EX-E concept and was lead designer of the MG F and the Land Rover Freelander, and led the team that created the third-generation Range Rover.
In 1999 Ford hired him to head Lincoln-Mercury design in California, and in 2003 he returned to Britain as creative director of Ford’s Ingeni studio in Soho. He joined Land Rover in 2004 as Director, Advanced Design, and led design at Jaguar Land Rover’s studio in Gaydon, Warwickshire, from the merger of the two companies in 2013. He was made an OBE in 2020. JLR confirmed in March 2026 that he was stepping down at the end of that month to establish his own creative consultancy.
