Mick Hyde and Phil Abbott, amateur racing drivers and engineers, founded Radical in Peterborough in January 1997. Their idea was to build lightweight, prototype-style sports-racing cars that club drivers could afford to buy, run and race.
The SR3 became the company’s most successful model, with more than 1,000 built, and Radical now organises or supports racing series around the world for its cars. The more powerful SR8 took the concept further, and in 2009 a road-legal SR8 driven by Michael Vergers lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 48 seconds, a record for a road-legal production car at the time.
Alongside its track cars, Radical has built road-legal versions and closed-cockpit models such as the RXC. It remains based in Peterborough.
